Lustres are overglazes that are applied to a glazed surface and require a third firing for it to adhere to the surface of your piece. Because lustre overglazes are made of actual precious metals, the end result is a brilliance unlike anything else in the ceramics field. Our Heraeus Copper lustre is in liquid form, and easy to paint on to a gloss glazed surface to add a brilliant gold decoration for that final, fancy touch!
Here are some suggestions for increasing your likelihood of achieving an exceptional result from your lustre firing:
- Ensure your working area is well ventilated and we strongly recommend wearing a respiratory mask
- Use a clean brush – preferably one that’s dedicated to the one particular lustre you are using
- Apply with one confident stroke – applying it too thin, or too thick, will produce a dull finish
- Copper lustre shows up best on a glossy glazed surface. Applying onto a satin or matte glaze, or unglazed surface, will result in a dull brown finish
- Recommended firing temperature range is 700°-850°c
