Metallic and Gold Lustre Decals
Blog by @cilla_ceramics
Ceramic decals are custom-printed designs that can be applied to ceramic surfaces for decoration purposes. The simple application process of decals can add some sparkle and flair to your ceramic art. Overglaze decals come in an array of patterns and are simple to apply and fire.
Ceramic decals are crafted from coloured mineral pigments and precious metals, making them available in metallic gold and platinum finishes. As you become familiar with decals you will find that the decals themselves ordinarily consist of three layers.
- Protective coating: A water-soluble film that facilitates the transfer of the decal onto the glazed ceramic surface.
- Design layer: The visible artwork or pattern, typically made using ceramic pigments, metallic finishes, or overglazes.
- Backing paper: A temporary base that supports the design until it is ready for application.
How to apply
Step one: Select desired decal, cut out if necessary.
Step two: Submerged in a bowl of warm water. This will loosen the design from the backing paper in order to release onto your piece.
Step three: Place design layer facing down onto glazed surface and slide the backing paper off.
Step four: Fire!
Tips: Before applying the decal to your already glazed pots be sure they are clean. It is best to hold the decal under water for a few (3-5) seconds (up to 30 seconds) and use a soft rubber rib to remove air bubbles from underneath the decals.
Firing
Firing, of course depends on the type of decals you are using and your kiln. Low fire decals on porcelain and ceramic, fire from cone 018 – 016.
Have fun!
Incorporating metallic or gold decals into pottery can add a touch of luxury that elevates simple pieces. From the application to the firing process, working with metallic and gold decals is a rewarding experience that enhances the final look of your ceramics. While it requires some care and practice it is a worthwhile finish.
