Chemically known as calcium carbonate (also known as whiting), this is widely used in glazes and clay bodies. When used in clay bodies it reduces the vitrification point. When used in glazes it increases hardness and durability. It is also used as a matting agent, although if used in excess (>30%) it can create rough and dry glazes.
