Carboxymethyl celluse gum (CMC gum) is often used as a binder for glazes, improving the way a glaze sticks to the surface of bisqueware as well as preventing a glaze from cracking when drying (which then means a more even and consistent glaze application). It is also often used as a thickener in slips and underglazes, which can make for interesting surface decoration or for use in screen printing.
CMC gum is sold in powder form, but it is recommended that it be dissolved into a solution before adding to a liquid such as glaze, slip or underglaze, in order to prevent clumping. There is no specific recipe to follow as it the concentration depends on the needs and application of the potter. A common suggestion is a ratio of 30 gram of gum mixed into 1 litre of water, and this concentration can be adjusted as needed. It is also recommended to allow your gum solution to dissolve over 24 hours before using it.
